How Beerus Killed Zamasu and Why It Couldn’t Stop Goku Black Explained in Dragon Ball Super

Beerus killing Zamasu should have prevented the terrifying Goku Black from ever existing, yet Dragon Ball Super reveals that things are far more complicated. After discovering that Zamasu planned to steal Goku’s body and eliminate mortals, Beerus uses his destruction power to erase the Universe 10 apprentice from existence. At first, this appears to solve the mystery surrounding Goku Black and the Future Trunks Saga.

However, Goku Black continues to exist in the future, creating one of the saga’s biggest timeline mysteries. The explanation comes from Future Trunks’ time travel, the existence of parallel timelines, and the special properties of the Time Ring used by Supreme Kais. Beerus did kill Zamasu, but he killed the version of Zamasu in the altered present timeline—not the version who had already become Goku Black in another timeline.

Why Beerus Could Destroy Zamasu but Not Goku Black

Beerus becomes suspicious of Zamasu after learning about his hatred of mortals and discovering his interest in switching bodies with Goku. When the heroes realize that Zamasu intends to become Goku Black, Beerus decides to intervene before the plan can happen. He uses Hakai, the power of a God of Destruction, and completely destroys the Zamasu standing before him.

The important detail is that Future Trunks had already traveled into the past. His actions changed the history of the present timeline, creating circumstances in which the heroes could discover Zamasu’s identity before he completed his plan. Beerus’ destruction therefore removes the Zamasu from that altered present timeline, but it does not retroactively erase every version of Zamasu existing across the multiverse.

This is where Goku Black’s timeline becomes crucial. In the timeline from which Goku Black originated, Zamasu successfully carried out his plan to exchange bodies with Goku. He then became Goku Black, killed the Goku of that timeline, and eventually traveled using a Time Ring to another future timeline. That version of Zamasu had therefore already reached the point where he was Goku Black before Beerus destroyed the Zamasu in the altered present.

The Time Ring also explains why Beerus’ actions do not simply wipe Goku Black out of existence. Supreme Kais use the rings to move between timelines, and the anime establishes that their users are protected from certain changes to their personal history. As a result, the destruction of the present-timeline Zamasu does not cause the already-existing Goku Black to disappear.

There is also another Zamasu involved in the future storyline. This version eventually becomes immortal through the Super Dragon Balls and joins forces with Goku Black to execute the Zero Mortal Plan. The two versions then use the Potara Earrings to become Fused Zamasu, turning the original timeline mystery into an even greater threat.

Therefore, Beerus did not fail to kill Zamasu. He successfully destroyed the Zamasu he encountered, but Goku Black was already a version of Zamasu from a different timeline. The Future Trunks Saga uses this distinction to show how Dragon Ball Super’s branching timelines can allow the same character to have completely different fates, making Beerus’ intervention effective without undoing the existence of Goku Black.
