Boruto Episode 39, titled “The Path Lit by the Full Moon,” is a major character focused episode that finally reveals Mitsuki’s mysterious origins. In the present, Sarada questions Mitsuki about his goals and why he is so comfortable following Boruto’s lead. Her question prompts Mitsuki to remember a time when he had lost his memories and awakened in an unfamiliar laboratory.
The episode then shifts into Mitsuki’s past, showing his relationship with Orochimaru and the events that shaped his identity. Mitsuki discovers that he is a synthetic human and encounters Log, an older version of himself. More importantly, the experience forces Mitsuki to make a decision for himself, establishing the foundation for his connection with Boruto.
What Happens in Mitsuki’s Side Story?
Mitsuki awakens without his memories while being cared for by Orochimaru and Suigetsu. Orochimaru tells him that his memories were stolen by a masked shinobi named Log and takes him on a mission to recover them. Mitsuki initially has little understanding of who he is, making the mission as much a search for his identity as it is a recovery operation.
Mitsuki eventually encounters Log and discovers the shocking truth about his origins. Log removes his mask and reveals that he is an older version of Mitsuki, with both characters having been artificially created by Orochimaru. Log argues that their existence is the result of Orochimaru’s experiments, while Orochimaru insists that their origins do not determine their value or future.
Caught between the conflicting views of Orochimaru and Log, Mitsuki refuses to simply accept either side’s definition of his identity. He activates his Sage Transformation, takes the container and key connected to his origins, and leaves after making a decision independently. This becomes the most important revelation of the episode because Mitsuki proves that he can choose his own path.
Inside the container, Mitsuki discovers an image of Boruto Uzumaki. He becomes interested in following Boruto, who eventually becomes the person Mitsuki describes as his “sun.” The episode therefore explains why Mitsuki joins Konoha and why his bond with Boruto becomes central to his character.
Episode 39 is consequently less about revealing a simple origin story and more about establishing Mitsuki’s free will. His decision to follow Boruto is presented as his own choice, giving greater meaning to his loyalty and friendship with Team 7.
