Taiyo Matsumoto’s catalog is widely celebrated for its unconventional storytelling and emotional depth, but one of his earliest works has remained largely inaccessible to English readers. That is now set to change. Manga Mavericks Books has confirmed that Brothers of Japan, an anthology originally released in Japan in 1995, will receive an official English edition in February 2027.

The announcement was made during the publisher’s Manga Mavericks Monday licensing event, where the company revealed its latest acquisition. The release will be available in both print and digital formats, marking the first time this particular collection is officially accessible to a wider global audience.

A Look Back at Matsumoto’s Creative Origins

Brothers of Japan is not just another addition to Matsumoto’s body of work, it serves as a window into the early stage of his artistic journey. The anthology includes 11 short stories created during his twenties, a period when his style was still evolving but already showing signs of the distinct voice that would later define his career.

The English version will be based on the revised 2010 edition of the manga, rather than the original 1995 print. This updated version offers improved presentation while preserving the raw, expressive storytelling that defines the collection. It allows readers to experience the work in a form that better reflects Matsumoto’s long-term artistic vision.

At the center of the anthology is the story Brothers of Japan, which follows two siblings attempting to dig their way to the other side of the world. The concept captures a sense of childlike ambition while also hinting at deeper emotional themes, something that would later become a hallmark of Matsumoto’s storytelling.

Pre-Orders and Release Details

Manga Mavericks Books has positioned the release as an accessible entry point for readers interested in exploring Matsumoto’s work. The paperback edition will be priced at $14.99, while the digital version will be available for $6.99. The book will run 216 pages and is recommended for readers aged 13 and above.

Pre-orders for the print edition are already available through the publisher’s official store, giving fans an early opportunity to secure a copy ahead of its 2027 release. You can check the listing here on their official site.

The physical edition will be released in an A5 paperback format, aligning with standard manga sizing for a comfortable reading experience. This attention to format ensures the anthology retains the feel of a traditional Japanese manga release.

The Creator’s Perspective on His Early Work

Alongside the announcement, Taiyo Matsumoto shared a personal message reflecting on the anthology and its significance. He expressed excitement about the English release, saying,

“I’m very happy that English speakers will now be able to read Brothers of Japan.”

His comments also reveal a more introspective view of the work. Matsumoto described the stories as containing elements of “immaturity,” something he now looks back on with a sense of embarrassment. At the same time, he emphasized that the collection holds emotional authenticity, noting that it captures

“soft and painful expressions that only young people can draw.”

This mix of self-criticism and appreciation highlights what makes the anthology unique. It is not a polished representation of his later career, but rather a raw and honest reflection of a creator still discovering his voice.
