For years, Dragon Ball fans wondered why Goku and Vegeta could become Super Saiyans while most Saiyan warriors never achieved the legendary transformation. Although intense training and powerful emotions played important roles, they did not fully explain how the transformation worked. Akira Toriyama eventually addressed this question by introducing S-Cells, special cells that determine whether a Saiyan has the potential to become a Super Saiyan.
Toriyama’s explanation also helped clarify why Goku’s sons, Gohan and Goten, could access the transformation despite their young age. According to his explanation, becoming a Super Saiyan depends on a combination of inherited potential, emotional temperament, and fighting strength. This expanded the lore behind one of Dragon Ball’s most iconic power-ups and provided a reason why the transformation became more common among later generations of Saiyans.
How S-Cells Explain the Super Saiyan Transformation in Dragon Ball
S-Cells are special cells found in Saiyan bodies that play a crucial role in unlocking the Super Saiyan form. Toriyama explained that most Saiyans possess some S-Cells, but their quantities vary considerably. A Saiyan needs to accumulate enough of these cells before a suitable trigger, such as intense anger, can cause the transformation. This means that simply training hard or becoming furious is not enough if the necessary biological potential is missing.

Toriyama also explained that having a gentle spirit is the easiest way to increase S-Cells. Saiyans were traditionally raised in a violent warrior culture, which helps explain why the transformation remained a legend for so long. However, a gentle personality alone cannot produce a Super Saiyan. A certain level of battle power is also necessary to reach the required threshold.
This explanation helps clarify Goku’s first transformation on Namek, which occurred after Frieza killed Krillin. Goku already possessed the necessary potential and fighting strength, while the emotional shock triggered his transformation. His journey toward becoming a Super Saiyan was therefore the result of several factors working together rather than anger alone.
S-Cells also explain why Goten and Trunks transformed at such young ages. As the children of Goku and Vegeta, they likely inherited substantial S-Cell potential from their fathers. Toriyama also suggested that Earth’s relatively peaceful environment compared with Planet Vegeta contributed to the conditions that allowed them to develop more S-Cells.
Ultimately, S-Cells added a biological explanation to the Super Saiyan transformation without removing the importance of training and emotional triggers. The concept also helps explain why later generations of Saiyans could achieve a form that once seemed almost impossible to attain.
