Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story has received its first full trailer, new key visual, additional cast members, and a confirmed January 2027 premiere window. The upcoming TV anime adapts Aito Aoyagi’s popular fairy-tale mystery novel series, which reimagines familiar storybook characters through a detective mystery setting.
The anime will premiere on TOKYO MX, BS NTV, and Yomiuri TV in Japan. Crunchyroll has also confirmed that it will stream Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story worldwide outside Asia when the series begins. An exact premiere date has not yet been announced.
The first episode is also scheduled to receive its world premiere at New York Comic Con on October 9, giving international fans an early opportunity to see the adaptation before its Japanese television debut.
New Trailer Introduces Red Riding Hood’s Mystery-Filled Journey
The newly released trailer gives a closer look at Yume Miyamoto’s Red Riding Hood and Akira Sekine’s Pinocchio. Rather than following the familiar fairy tale, the anime places Red in a world where she repeatedly encounters suspicious incidents and uses her intelligence to uncover what happened.
Pony Canyon describes the series as a combination of fairy tales and mystery, with Red becoming involved in cases during her travels. Her investigative approach is captured by the line,
“Why is your criminal plan so sloppy?”,
highlighting the series’ playful approach to crime-solving.

The production has also added six voices to the cast. Takuya Satō plays Jill, Atsushi Tamaru voices Antonio, Motoko Kumai plays Rodrigo, Kōtarō Nishiyama voices Paolo, Sakiko Uran plays Thumbelina, and Ryōko Shiraishi provides the narration.
The new characters expand the fairy-tale world beyond Red and Pinocchio, giving the protagonist more figures to encounter as she investigates the strange incidents surrounding her journey.
BENTEN Film Leads the 2027 Anime Adaptation

Itsurō Kawasaki is directing Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story at BENTEN Film while also handling the scripts. Manami Minakata and Yūko Yahiro are responsible for character designs, with Izumi Hoki and Hiroshi Katō working as art directors. Jun Ichikawa is composing the music, while Pony Canyon is handling music production.
Kawasaki previously discussed the challenge of adapting Aoyagi’s mystery stories, explaining that production involves more than simply drawing the characters.
“I’ve encountered various challenges, not only drawing the characters, but also explaining the magic tricks and matching the scenes to the setting,”
Kawasaki said in an interview with Animation World Network.
Aoyagi’s original novel series began publication through Futabasha in 2020. The series has surpassed 600,000 copies in circulation and has also received a completed manga adaptation.
The franchise previously received a Netflix live-action adaptation titled Once Upon a Crime in 2023, starring Kanna Hashimoto as Red Riding Hood. The upcoming anime will now bring Aoyagi’s fairy-tale detective concept to television in January 2027.
