Boruto: Naruto Next Generations continues the story of the shinobi world after the events of Naruto Shippuden, shifting the focus to Naruto Uzumaki’s son and a new generation of ninja. Boruto grows up in a peaceful Hidden Leaf Village where technology and modern life have changed how shinobi operate. However, his position as the Seventh Hokage’s son creates its own pressure, especially because Boruto wants recognition for his own abilities rather than simply being known as Naruto’s child.
The story eventually moves far beyond Boruto’s life as a young ninja. The arrival of the Ōtsutsuki, the mysterious Kāma seal, Kawaki’s relationship with the Uzumaki family, and the emergence of powerful enemies transform the series into a much darker continuation of the original story. Following the events of the first manga series, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex jumps forward three years and places Boruto in a dramatically different world.
Boruto’s Story, Characters, Powers and Major Arcs Explained
Boruto begins his journey as part of Team 7 alongside Sarada Uchiha and Mitsuki, with Konohamaru Sarutobi serving as their leader. Sarada dreams of becoming Hokage, while Mitsuki has a mysterious connection to Orochimaru. Their early missions gradually introduce Boruto to the responsibilities of being a shinobi and establish the relationships that become central to the larger story.
One of the earliest major turning points is the Chunin Exams, where Boruto becomes involved in the conflict with Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki. After the battle, Momoshiki places the Kāma on Boruto, giving him access to enormous power while also creating a connection to the Ōtsutsuki clan. The seal eventually becomes one of the central mysteries of the story and ties Boruto directly to the series’ increasingly dangerous Ōtsutsuki conflict.
Kawaki becomes another major character after entering Boruto’s life. Having been raised and experimented on by Kara, Kawaki initially struggles to trust others but gradually develops a powerful bond with Naruto and the Uzumaki family. His relationship with Boruto becomes increasingly complicated because both boys possess Kāma and eventually find themselves caught in a conflict involving Naruto’s safety and the future of the shinobi world.
Boruto’s abilities also change considerably throughout the story. His natural talent includes the Shadow Clone Technique and Rasengan, while his connection to Momoshiki gives him access to Kāma’s Ōtsutsuki abilities. Later developments push his combat skills much further, with Two Blue Vortex presenting a significantly stronger Boruto after his training with Sasuke.
The major story eventually leads into the events of Two Blue Vortex, where Boruto returns to Konoha after a three year time skip. Due to Eida’s Omnipotence, Boruto and Kawaki’s identities have effectively been switched in the eyes of the world, leaving Boruto branded as a traitor. Meanwhile, new Divine Tree enemies emerge from the Ten Tails, creating another threat that goes beyond the earlier Ōtsutsuki conflict.
As of the latest chapters, Two Blue Vortex continues expanding Boruto’s powers while exploring the consequences of Omnipotence, Kawaki’s decisions, and the Divine Tree threat. The sequel therefore moves the franchise away from simply being Naruto’s successor and toward a story centered on Boruto’s own identity, abilities, and struggle to survive in a world that now considers him its enemy.
