Japan’s box office remained highly competitive during the Golden Week holiday period, with Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway continuing its strong theatrical run while new releases entered the rankings. In its fourth weekend, the long-running anime franchise installment secured the No. 3 position, maintaining momentum even as fresh titles debuted across theaters.
According to industry data, the film earned approximately 932 million yen over the May 1 to May 3 weekend, drawing nearly 649,000 admissions. Although it slipped one spot from the previous weekend, its overall performance highlights sustained audience interest nearly a month after release.
Detective Conan Film Crosses Major Box Office Milestone
The latest Conan film has now surpassed 10.88 billion yen in total box office revenue within 27 days, alongside more than 7.4 million admissions. This milestone places it among the top-performing entries in the franchise and marks a significant achievement for the series as a whole.
Notably, Fallen Angel of the Highway becomes the fourth consecutive Detective Conan film to cross the 10 billion yen mark. This is the first time in Japanese cinema history that a single film series has achieved this milestone four years in a row, underscoring the franchise’s enduring popularity.
The film has also climbed to become the fourth highest-grossing entry in the series, surpassing The Bride of Halloween. Its performance places it among the top 25 highest-grossing films in Japan, further cementing its success during a crowded release window.
Among the new releases, the live-action adaptation of Sakamoto Days made a notable debut, landing in fourth place. The film earned 478 million yen across 346,000 admissions during its opening, performing well above expectations.
Its early performance is particularly impressive when compared to recent live-action adaptations, more than doubling the opening figures of director Yuichi Fukuda’s earlier project Under Ninja. Within its first eight days, including the Golden Week period, the film has already reached 1.5 billion yen in total earnings, signaling strong audience interest.
Other Releases Add to a Crowded Top 10
The box office chart also saw several other notable entries. The anniversary film Agito: Chonoryoku Senso, tied to the long-running Kamen Rider Agito franchise, debuted in fifth place with 110 million yen in its opening weekend. Its cumulative earnings have already crossed 300 million yen within eight days.
Meanwhile, original anime film Cosmic Princess Kaguya! continued its steady run, remaining in the top 10 for 11 consecutive weekends. Compilation film Sound! Euphonium, The Final Movie Part 1 experienced a drop in rankings during its second weekend, while Doraemon: Nobita and the New Castle of the Undersea Devil rounded out the top 10 in its tenth weekend.
These results reflect a diverse lineup of films, ranging from anime blockbusters to live-action adaptations and legacy franchises.
The Golden Week holiday period continues to play a crucial role in boosting theatrical performance across Japan. With multiple high-profile releases competing for attention, overall attendance remained strong, contributing to sustained earnings for both new and ongoing titles.
While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and The Devil Wears Prada 2 occupied the top two spots during the weekend, the consistent performance of Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway highlights the franchise’s ability to maintain momentum even in a competitive market.
As the box office moves beyond the holiday period, attention will shift to whether these films can sustain their performance in the weeks ahead. For now, the latest Conan installment continues to stand out as one of 2026’s biggest successes in Japan.
