Historia Reiss begins Attack on Titan under a false identity, presenting herself as the gentle and self-sacrificing Krista Lenz. Behind that persona, however, is a young woman struggling with an unwanted childhood, a hidden royal heritage, and the belief that her life only has value when she sacrifices herself for others. Her relationship with Ymir gradually challenges that mindset, encouraging Historia to stop pretending to be someone she is not.
This becomes crucial when the truth about her family emerges and her father, Rod Reiss, attempts to use her to restore the Founding Titan to the royal bloodline. Historia’s transformation is therefore not a Titan transformation, but a dramatic change in her identity, confidence, and willingness to choose her own future. Her decision during the Uprising arc ultimately makes her the legitimate Queen of the Walls and gives her a much larger role in Paradis’ political future.
How Historia Reiss Transformed and Became Important to Paradis
Historia’s early life explains why she created the Krista persona. As Rod Reiss’ illegitimate daughter, she was kept away from the royal family and treated as an unwanted child. Her half-sister Frieda secretly visited her, taught her to read, and encouraged her to become the kind of person represented by the idealized “Krista” figure.
Ymir became the person who most directly challenged this false identity. She recognized that Historia was constantly trying to appear selfless and told her to live proudly as herself instead. Historia eventually embraces that advice, especially after discovering that she is a member of the Reiss family and that her bloodline is connected to the Founding Titan.
Her defining moment comes when Rod Reiss wants her to inject herself with Titan serum, eat Eren, and reclaim the Founding Titan for their family. Historia realizes that previous royal inheritors were controlled by the ideology of the First King, meaning inheriting the Founding Titan would not give her the freedom she imagined. Instead, she rejects Rod’s plan, destroys the serum, and chooses to save Eren.
Historia then participates in the battle against Rod’s enormous Titan and personally delivers the killing blow. Afterward, she publicly declares herself the true ruler and is crowned queen. Her transformation from a girl hiding behind “Krista Lenz” into a monarch willing to make her own decisions represents one of Attack on Titan’s clearest themes: choosing your own identity instead of accepting the role imposed on you.
