Boruto Uzumaki’s Kāma mark gives Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki the ability to take control of his body whenever Boruto becomes sufficiently weakened.
This becomes one of the biggest threats in the Boruto story because Momoshiki can use Boruto’s abilities and battle experience while possessing him. Boruto initially has almost no reliable way to stop the takeover once Momoshiki manifests. However, his connection with Kawaki eventually provides the opening needed for Boruto to regain control. The process also changes the nature of Boruto’s relationship with Momoshiki permanently.
How Boruto Takes Back Control From Momoshiki
During the battle involving Boro, Momoshiki first takes complete control after Boruto loses consciousness. Sasuke and Kawaki realize that Momoshiki still needs Boruto’s body alive, giving them an opportunity to exploit the situation. Kawaki deliberately uses a Fire Style technique on himself and forces Momoshiki to absorb the chakra, which restores enough energy to Boruto for his consciousness to resurface. Boruto then takes back control and breaks off Momoshiki’s horn, causing the Kāma manifestation to recede.
This does not permanently solve Boruto’s problem, however. Later, Momoshiki takes control again during the conflict with Code, proving that Amado’s medicine could only suppress the problem temporarily. Kawaki eventually fights Momoshiki while knowing that killing Boruto may be necessary, and Boruto consciously allows Kawaki to strike him because he wants to prevent Momoshiki from destroying his family and the village.
Boruto’s death leads to the biggest change in the situation. Momoshiki uses the remaining Kāma data to revive Boruto, replacing the remaining portion with Boruto’s own data. This prevents Momoshiki from resurrecting through Boruto in the traditional sense, while simultaneously making Boruto a complete Ōtsutsuki. Momoshiki therefore remains connected to Boruto as a consciousness rather than simply waiting to reincarnate through his body.
So, Boruto does not simply overpower Momoshiki and permanently remove him. His control comes from a combination of Kawaki’s intervention, Boruto’s own resistance, and Momoshiki’s decision to sacrifice his remaining resurrection data to save his vessel. The result leaves Boruto in control of his body, but Momoshiki remains an ongoing presence within his mind and continues to pose a threat.
