NIPPON SANGOKU: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun is officially returning with a sequel. Twin Engine confirmed that production is underway on the continuation of the anime based on Ikka Matsuki’s manga, just months after the first season concluded in June 2026. A new announcement video has also been released, offering fans their first look at newly produced footage from the upcoming continuation.
The announcement is particularly notable because the new footage appears to move Aoteru Misumi’s story forward. The video revisits important events from the first season before revealing an older version of Aoteru, who remains committed to his goal of creating a lasting era of peace in a Japan divided by war and political conflict.
What to expect from the NIPPON SANGOKU sequel
The anime takes place in a near-future Japan where civilization has collapsed following nuclear war, natural disasters and corrupt government. The country has fractured into three competing nations, creating a new Three Kingdoms era in which Aoteru, once an ordinary local government official, attempts to reunify Japan through his intelligence, political skill and strategic thinking.
The first season was directed by Kazuaki Terasawa at Studio Kafka, with character designs and chief animation direction handled by Takahiko Abiru. The production also featured series composition by Teruko Utsumi and music from Made in Abyss and The Apothecary Diaries composer Kevin Penkin.
The original manga has also experienced significant growth alongside the anime. Its cumulative circulation stood at approximately one million copies when the anime premiered in April, before surpassing two million copies just one month later. The anime also ranked first among new Prime Video anime series that debuted in Japan during April based on first-month domestic viewership and entered Prime Video’s global Top 10.
Matsuki expressed his excitement about seeing the story continue in animated form.
“I am truly delighted that a sequel to the Nippon Sangoku anime is being produced,”
the creator said, adding that the spark from the first series will eventually become a flame that
“profoundly shakes the destinies of its people.”
He also said he is eager to see how the manga’s history is reinterpreted through animation.
For now, Twin Engine has not announced the sequel’s release date, episode count or specific format. It is therefore too early to confirm whether the project will be marketed as a second season or another form of animated continuation.
