For most of the series, U.A. serves as Japan’s premier hero academy, but as the conflict against All For One and Tomura Shigaraki reaches its climax, the school becomes a technologically advanced battlefield unlike anything seen before. Rather than simply acting as a safe haven for students, U.A. evolves into the centerpiece of the heroes’ final strategy.
Many fans wonder how an ordinary school suddenly gains the ability to float in the sky and withstand one of the strongest villains in the series. The answer lies in Principal Nezu’s extensive preparations, cutting-edge engineering, and a defense system specifically created to counter Shigaraki’s overwhelming Decay Quirk. The floating fortress is not just an impressive spectacle—it is a carefully designed weapon that plays a crucial role in Operation Troy and the Final War.
Why does U.A. become a flying fortress?
After Japan’s hero society begins collapsing and All For One launches his final offensive, the heroes realize that fighting Tomura Shigaraki on ordinary terrain would be disastrous. Shigaraki’s enhanced Decay Quirk can spread across entire cities through connected surfaces, instantly destroying everything in its path. A traditional battlefield would only give him unlimited opportunities to unleash that power.
Principal Nezu anticipates this threat well before the final battle. He secretly upgrades U.A.’s existing security infrastructure into a massive defensive system capable of isolating, relocating, and protecting both civilians and heroes. These preparations transform the academy from a school into one of humanity’s strongest fortresses.
The flying fortress is powered by the upgraded U.A. Barrier, which is far more advanced than the defensive walls introduced earlier in the series. Nezu explains that the campus is divided into numerous movable sections, much like pieces on a game board. Each section can separate from the others and operate independently during emergencies.
These partitions connect to an underground linear magnetic transportation network that allows entire sections of the campus to move safely beneath the surface. In addition to protecting civilians, the system prevents Shigaraki’s Decay from spreading across one continuous structure. By breaking the school into multiple isolated segments, the heroes eliminate one of the villain’s greatest advantages.
During Operation Troy, the heroes lure All For One’s forces into carefully prepared traps before separating them across multiple battlefields. Shigaraki is intentionally transported to U.A., where the academy activates its aerial fortress mode. Instead of remaining on the ground, enormous propulsion systems lift the entire battlefield into the sky.
Keeping the battlefield airborne serves several purposes. First, it minimizes the damage Shigaraki can inflict on nearby cities and civilians. Second, it prevents his Decay from easily reaching natural terrain that could spread his destructive power over vast distances. Finally, the isolated battlefield allows the heroes to deploy specialized countermeasures without risking the rest of Japan.
The floating U.A. is much more than a giant platform. It incorporates countless mechanical panels, moving structures, automated barriers, and support equipment designed by U.A.’s engineers and the Support Course. These mechanisms constantly reshape the battlefield to keep Shigaraki off balance while assisting the heroes fighting him.
Another crucial component is the electromagnetic stabilization system that keeps the fortress airborne despite repeated attacks. Even after Shigaraki damages portions of the structure, engineers and support teams continue repairing the platform during combat. Although the fortress eventually suffers severe damage, it survives long enough for the heroes to continue executing their strategy against one of history’s strongest villains.
