Mitsuki and Sekiei’s friendship is one of the most emotional parts of the Mitsuki Disappearance Arc in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Both characters are artificial humans created by others, but they have very different experiences with identity and belonging. Mitsuki arrives among the Fabrications while secretly trying to understand his own purpose, while Sekiei becomes fascinated by him because Mitsuki is also an artificial human who has experienced life outside their controlled environment. As they travel together, Sekiei asks Mitsuki about ordinary human experiences and begins treating him as a genuine friend. Their connection becomes especially meaningful because Sekiei desperately wants to understand emotions and form relationships before his unstable body eventually fails him.

How Mitsuki and Sekiei Become Friends

Sekiei initially becomes interested in Mitsuki because they share something unusual. Both were artificially created, yet Mitsuki has experienced life in Konoha and developed relationships with people such as Boruto and Sarada. Sekiei therefore sees Mitsuki as someone who can explain the human experiences that he has never fully understood. During their journey, Mitsuki teaches him simple aspects of everyday human life, including eating, brushing his teeth, and understanding friendship.

Their friendship becomes stronger when Sekiei realizes that Mitsuki secretly protected the Konoha shinobi he was supposed to have killed. Mitsuki explains that he left a message for Boruto instead, making it clear that he had chosen to leave Konoha voluntarily. Sekiei understands that Mitsuki is not simply pretending to care about people, and he keeps Mitsuki’s secret rather than exposing him to the other Fabrications. (naruto.fandom.com

Sekiei’s declining health also brings the two closer. His body begins deteriorating because of the limitations of the Fabrications, forcing Mitsuki to spend more time looking after him while they wait for help. Sekiei openly talks about wanting to become more human and eventually reveals that what he truly wants is not power, but meaningful connections with others. Mitsuki’s own questions about identity allow the two characters to recognize that they share the same desire to understand what it means to have a life of their own.

Their friendship is ultimately tested when Mitsuki reveals his true intentions and turns against the Fabrications. Sekiei feels betrayed because he genuinely believed Mitsuki was his friend, leading him to attack him despite his deteriorating body. Mitsuki refuses to fight him with the intention of killing him and instead offers to take Sekiei to Orochimaru, hoping his creator can save him.

Sekiei finally understands that Mitsuki’s friendship was genuine. He accepts that Mitsuki had never intended to deceive him about their bond and expresses his wish to have a life like Mitsuki’s. His final attempt to share one more fist bump with Mitsuki makes their relationship especially tragic, as Sekiei dies before Mitsuki can return the gesture. Their friendship ultimately shows that being artificially created does not prevent someone from experiencing genuine emotions, loyalty, and the need for human connection.
