Sekiro: No Defeat director Kenichi Kutsuna has made an unusual request to fans ahead of the anime’s limited Japanese theatrical release. After a new one-minute trailer was published online, Kutsuna warned viewers not to watch it because it contains a cinematic reveal that he believes should be experienced in theaters.
The trailer, titled “The Battle in the Silvergrass Fields,” was released on September 3 through the anime’s official channels. According to Kutsuna, the footage was not supposed to be available beforehand, making his public warning particularly unusual.
In a post on his personal X account, Kutsuna explained that the video contains material that may not technically reveal a major plot point but could nevertheless diminish the impact of a particular cinematic moment.
“I know it’s probably too late,”
the director wrote, before asking audiences who intend to watch the anime in theaters to avoid the trailer.
Kutsuna later attributed the early release to negligence by ARCH, one of the companies involved in producing the anime. He also clarified that Kadokawa should not be held responsible for the mistake. Sekiro: No Defeat is animated by Qzil.la and co-produced by ARCH and Kadokawa.
The anime begins its three-week limited theatrical run in Japan on September 4. A worldwide streaming release is planned through Crunchyroll, although an international release date has not yet been announced.
With the trailer reportedly still available online, fans hoping to experience the reveal without prior knowledge may want to follow the director’s request and skip the footage until they have seen the anime.
