Sekiro: No Defeat is getting a second life as an eight-episode TV anime, with the series now scheduled to premiere in January 2027. The adaptation of FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice originally arrived as a theatrical film in Japan on September 4, but the television version will expand that story with additional episodes and newly added footage.
The announcement also confirms that Crunchyroll will stream Sekiro: No Defeat worldwide outside Japan, China, Korea, Russia, and Belarus. A new key visual was released alongside the January premiere announcement, giving fans another look at the anime’s interpretation of the game’s characters and world.
The Movie Is Being Expanded Into an Eight-Episode Series
Rather than simply splitting the theatrical version into individual episodes, the TV adaptation will reportedly reconstruct the movie while adding new episodes and numerous new scenes. This gives the production an opportunity to expand the story and spend more time with Sekiro and the characters surrounding him.
The original theatrical version began its three-week Japanese run on September 4. It also received additional screenings beginning October 2 following its initial theatrical performance.
The adaptation is directed by Kenichi Kutsuna at Qzil.la, with Shunsuke Fukui serving as assistant director. Takahiro Kishida is handling character designs, while Shuta Hasunuma is composing the music.
Fans of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice can also expect familiar Japanese voices. Daisuke Namikawa returns as Sekiro, with Miyuki Satō as Kuro, Kenjirō Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina, Jin Urayama as the Sculptor, Shizuka Itō as Emma, Takaya Hashi as Owl, and Tetsuo Kanao as Isshin Ashina.
The anime follows the same core setting as FromSoftware’s 2019 game, centering on Sekiro, a shinobi tasked with protecting the Divine Heir during a period of violent conflict in Sengoku-era Japan. The original game was developed by FromSoftware and has since become one of the studio’s most acclaimed titles.
The transition from a theatrical film to an eight-episode series could give Sekiro: No Defeat considerably more room to explore its characters, action sequences, and supernatural mythology.
With the expanded TV version arriving in January 2027, international viewers will be able to experience the anime through Crunchyroll when it premieres.
