Mitsuki’s journey to the Land of Earth is one of the most important parts of the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime’s Mitsuki’s Disappearance Arc. His decision to leave Konoha initially makes Boruto, Sarada, and the other shinobi suspect that he has betrayed the village. However, Mitsuki is not simply abandoning his friends or joining the Hidden Stone Village. He is searching for an answer to a deeply personal question about his identity and free will. The journey begins after Mitsuki becomes increasingly uncertain about whether his feelings and decisions are genuinely his own or influenced by his creator, Orochimaru.
Mitsuki travels toward the Land of Earth with Kokuyō, Sekiei, and other artificial humans connected to Iwagakure. He believes their experiences may help him understand what it means to have an independent will. The journey also introduces Mitsuki to Sekiei, whose questions about humanity and his own existence give Mitsuki another perspective on what it means to choose one’s own path.
Why Mitsuki Travels to the Land of Earth
Mitsuki’s main reason for traveling to the Land of Earth is to understand his own will. Before leaving Konoha, he has already started questioning whether his attachment to Boruto and his life in the village are genuine choices. Because Mitsuki was artificially created by Orochimaru, he struggles with the possibility that his personality and decisions could have been predetermined by his creator.
The artificial humans from Iwagakure give Mitsuki a possible way to find answers. They are also artificially created beings, meaning their existence has similarities to his own. Mitsuki therefore believes that meeting Kū and learning about their experiences could help him understand whether someone who was created by another person can truly possess an independent will.
Mitsuki’s relationship with Sekiei becomes especially important during the journey. As Sekiei’s body begins to deteriorate, he asks Mitsuki about ordinary human experiences and wants to understand what it means to live as a person. Mitsuki responds by sharing what he knows about life in Konoha, while their conversations gradually create a genuine friendship between the two artificial humans.
The journey also forces Mitsuki to confront his feelings for Boruto. He tells Sekiei that Boruto is his “sun,” showing how important his friend has become to him. Yet Mitsuki still wonders whether that attachment is truly his own choice, making his journey to the Land of Earth part of a larger search for personal identity.
Mitsuki ultimately discovers that having a creator does not mean his choices are meaningless. His actions throughout the journey show that he can make decisions based on his own values, including choosing to protect people he cares about. His trip to the Land of Earth therefore becomes less about finding someone who can define his will and more about realizing that his choices are what define him.
