The 4K re-release of Kiki’s Delivery Service has returned to Japan’s weekly box office Top 10 after expanding to theaters nationwide. According to Kogyo Tsushinsha, Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved 1989 animated film climbed from 11th to 8th place during the July 3–5 weekend.

The resurgence comes after the remastered release expanded from 65 IMAX theaters to 116 theaters across all 47 prefectures in Japan, beginning July 3. The film originally debuted in sixth place when the 4K revival launched on June 19.

Nationwide expansion boosts Kiki’s Delivery Service

The wider theatrical rollout helped Kiki’s Delivery Service return to the Top 10 in its third weekend, demonstrating continued audience interest in one of Studio Ghibli’s most celebrated classics.

Meanwhile, Toy Story 5 debuted at No. 1 on the weekend chart, followed by Michael in second place. Soreike! Anpanman: Pantan to Yakusoku no Hoshi held steady at No. 5, while the latest Sgt. Frog theatrical film dropped to 10th during its second weekend.

Although Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway fell out of Japan’s weekly Top 10 for the first time in its 13-week run, the film achieved another significant box office milestone.

According to Oricon News, the latest Detective Conan movie has now earned 13.52 billion yen (approximately $83.4 million) after 87 days in theaters.

That total moves the film to 27th place on Japan’s all-time box office chart, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody (13.51 billion yen) and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (13.5 billion yen).

Elsewhere, THE ORIGIN OF ULTRAMAN, a documentary celebrating the franchise’s 60th anniversary, opened in 35 theaters. While it did not enter the overall Top 10, it ranked sixth in Filmarks’ first-day audience satisfaction rankings.
