Star Detective Precure! The Movie: The Mysterious Garden and the Secret of Two has made a strong debut at the Japanese box office, opening at No. 3 during its first weekend.
The film attracted approximately 357,000 moviegoers and earned around 445 million yen ($2.8 million) between September 18 and 20. It played across 348 theaters in Japan and recorded the strongest three-day opening in the Precure franchise, surpassing the previous record held by Precure All Stars F.
The film’s momentum continued through the Silver Week holiday period. By September 23, Star Detective Precure! had sold approximately 606,000 tickets and earned 746 million yen ($4.7 million) in its first six days.
The movie is the theatrical feature for Star Detective Precure!, the 23rd main entry in the long-running franchise. The story introduces original characters Karin, Alan, and Rain, with Akari Kito, Nobunaga Shimazaki, and Koki Uchiyama joining the voice cast.
Chiikawa Continues Its Historic Box Office Run
While Star Detective Precure! took third place, Chiikawa: The Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island remained firmly at No. 1 for its ninth consecutive weekend.
The film sold approximately 643,000 tickets and earned 999 million yen ($6.3 million) over the September 18-20 weekend. Its cumulative total had reached 11.33 million admissions and 16.5 billion yen ($104.3 million) by September 23.
The success has made Chiikawa: The Movie the highest-grossing film in Japan in 2026 so far. It has also entered the country’s all-time box office top 15.
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! also returned to Japanese theaters on September 18, benefiting from premium-format screenings including MX4D, 4DX, SCREENX, ULTRA 4DX, and Dolby Atmos.
The film opened at No. 6 during its return engagement. Before the rerelease, it had already surpassed 3 billion yen ($19 million) in Japan and sold more than 1.5 million tickets.
Elsewhere in the rankings, Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising fell from No. 4 to No. 8 in its fourth weekend. The live-action adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back dropped from No. 5 to No. 10 in its second weekend.
The latest results highlight another strong week for anime releases in Japan, with Chiikawa continuing its extraordinary run while Star Detective Precure! establishes a new opening benchmark for the Precure franchise.
