Crunchyroll has officially announced the 4K and IMAX theatrical re-release of AKIRA across the United States and Canada, set to hit cinemas on September 4, 2026. The legendary cyberpunk anime will be distributed by Crunchyroll in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment, offering both Japanese audio with English subtitles and an English dub.

First released in 1988 and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, AKIRA remains one of the most influential anime films in history, widely credited with shaping modern sci-fi and cyberpunk storytelling across global cinema.

According to Crunchyroll’s official description, the film continues to stand as a “game-changing anime masterpiece” that redefined animation boundaries and inspired generations of creators worldwide.

Neo-Tokyo’s Classic Story Returns in Enhanced Format

The re-release will feature a fully restored 4K version optimized for IMAX theaters, allowing audiences to experience the dystopian world of Neo-Tokyo with upgraded visuals and cinematic clarity.

The story follows Kaneda and Tetsuo, members of a biker gang steering a futuristic Tokyo rebuilt after World War III. After a mysterious encounter with a government experiment, Tetsuo develops uncontrollable psychic abilities, triggering chaos that threatens the entire city.

As Kaneda attempts to rescue his friend, he becomes entangled in a military conspiracy that explores themes of power, control, and human evolution—core elements that have kept AKIRA culturally relevant for decades.

Crunchyroll highlights AKIRA as a defining work that “obliterated the boundaries of Japanese animation,” reinforcing its status as a foundational title in anime history.

The film has previously seen multiple restorations, including a 4K remaster released in Japan in 2020, but this marks a major theatrical push for North American audiences in premium IMAX format.

By bringing the film back to cinemas, Crunchyroll continues its strategy of reviving classic anime titles for modern audiences while preserving their cinematic legacy.
