The Tournament of Power gave Dragon Ball Super some of its biggest transformations and battles, yet one major possibility remained unexplored: Goku and Vegeta fighting as Gogeta or Vegito. Fans naturally wondered whether Universe 7 could have used fusion against overwhelming opponents such as Jiren, especially after Kale and Caulifla demonstrated that Potara fusion was permitted. However, neither Gogeta nor Vegito actually appeared during the Tournament of Power in the main Dragon Ball Super story.
The idea remains a fascinating hypothetical because the tournament’s rules did allow fusion, meaning there was no simple rule preventing Goku and Vegeta from combining their power. The bigger question was whether using fusion would have been strategically worthwhile, particularly because both fusion methods have time limitations and because losing a fused warrior would eliminate both participants.
Why Gogeta or Vegito Could Have Changed the Tournament of Power
Vegito would have been the most straightforward option because Goku and Vegeta had already used the Potara earrings during the Future Trunks Saga. In the Tournament of Power, Potara fusion was eventually permitted after the Grand Priest confirmed that the earrings could be used, following Kefla’s appearance. That means a hypothetical Vegito could legally have entered the battle, although the fused warrior would still have carried the risk of both Goku and Vegeta being eliminated if he were knocked out.
Gogeta would have required Goku and Vegeta to perform the Fusion Dance, giving them a different set of advantages and limitations. The Fusion Dance traditionally produces a fusion lasting up to 30 minutes, while excessive power can affect fusion duration in certain circumstances. Vegito’s Potara fusion was stated to have a one-hour limit for mortals, although the immense power of Super Saiyan Blue caused the fusion to end prematurely during the Zamasu battle.
From a story perspective, either fusion could have dramatically altered the Tournament of Power, particularly during the battle against Jiren. However, using Goku and Vegeta as a single fighter would also have removed two of Universe 7’s strongest individual competitors, making the decision risky in a tournament where ring-outs determined survival. The series instead chose to develop Goku’s Ultra Instinct and Vegeta’s Super Saiyan Blue Evolution separately, preserving their individual arcs and allowing the finale to focus on teamwork rather than another fusion.
Gogeta’s later appearance in Dragon Ball Super: Broly also confirmed how powerful the Fusion Dance could be when Goku and Vegeta worked together. Nevertheless, that movie takes place after the Tournament of Power, so it does not mean Gogeta was secretly present or intended to appear during the tournament. Gogeta and Vegito’s Tournament of Power appearance remains a hypothetical scenario rather than an event from the canon story.
