Japan has named legendary anime director Rintarō one of its 2026 Persons of Cultural Merit, recognizing his lasting contributions to the country’s animation industry. The filmmaker, whose real name is Shigeyuki Hayashi, is among 20 honorees selected by the Japanese government this year.
Rintarō received the distinction for his role in developing television animation, including his work on the influential series Astro Boy. His career spans several decades and includes some of anime’s most recognizable science-fiction and fantasy productions.
The recognition arrives as Rintarō remains connected to one of his best-known franchises, Galaxy Express 999. He is currently contributing the original story draft for a newly announced theatrical anime based on the work of manga creator Leiji Matsumoto.
Rintarō’s Legacy Across Generations of Anime
Rintarō’s career includes acclaimed productions such as Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Harmagedon, X/1999, The Dagger of Kamui and Metropolis. He also worked alongside influential manga creator Osamu Tezuka on early television anime, including Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion.

His connection to Galaxy Express 999 is especially significant. The original 1979 theatrical film and its 1981 sequel, Adieu Galaxy Express 999, helped establish his reputation for cinematic science-fiction storytelling. Now, he is contributing the story concept for a new theatrical film produced by Toei Animation, as confirmed by the studio’s official announcement. A release date and further production details have not yet been announced.
Rintarō has also continued exploring different forms of storytelling. In 2023, he directed Nezumikozō Jirokichi, a silent animated short that marked his first directorial work in 14 years. His autobiographical manga, My Life in 24 Frames per Second, launched in 2024 and won the Grand Prize at the 29th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2025.
The cultural honor recognizes Rintarō’s influence on Japanese animation and arrives as his work continues to reach new audiences through both classic releases and upcoming projects.
