Yamoshi is one of the most mysterious figures in Dragon Ball lore, yet his story is directly connected to the origins of Super Saiyan God. Long before Goku unlocked the red-haired transformation to fight Beerus in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, an ancient Saiyan warrior became part of a legend that would eventually change the franchise’s understanding of Saiyan power. Unlike the ruthless warriors traditionally associated with the Saiyan race, Yamoshi possessed a righteous heart and fought alongside five companions in a rebellion against other Saiyans.
Although Yamoshi’s story has never been fully adapted into an anime arc, creator Akira Toriyama revealed important details about his identity and legacy in a 2017 interview. His history explains the connection between the original Super Saiyan legend, the Super Saiyan God prophecy, and the ritual Goku uses to obtain divine power. Understanding Yamoshi also helps explain why Beerus was searching for a legendary Saiyan capable of challenging him.
Yamoshi’s Origin, the First Super Saiyan Legend, and His Connection to Super Saiyan God

According to Toriyama’s explanation, Yamoshi lived long before Planet Vegeta became the Saiyans’ home. Despite belonging to a warrior race known for its aggression, he possessed a righteous heart and joined five companions in a rebellion. When the group was surrounded by enemy warriors, Yamoshi transformed into a Super Saiyan for the first time, surprising the other Saiyans with his extraordinary fighting ability.
However, Yamoshi eventually exhausted his energy and was defeated. His physical defeat did not end his legacy, as his spirit continued searching for six righteous Saiyans who could bring forth a new savior, the Super Saiyan God. This revelation connects the ancient warrior directly to the ritual that allows Goku to achieve the red-haired divine transformation.
Yamoshi’s story also explains part of Beerus’ search for the Super Saiyan God. Toriyama suggested that Beerus may have learned about Yamoshi’s spirit through a prophetic dream, while the legend was preserved in Namekian records. This establishes Yamoshi as an important link between ancient Saiyan history and the events of Dragon Ball Super.
However, there is an important distinction: Yamoshi is explicitly identified as the first Super Saiyan in Toriyama’s account, while his connection to Super Saiyan God is more nuanced. Toriyama described the legendary Super Saiyan and the Super Saiyan God as the same person in a certain sense, but Yamoshi’s original transformation was Super Saiyan, not the red-haired form Goku later achieves.
Yamoshi remains a largely unexplored character whose full story has yet to be told on screen. His legacy nevertheless provides a crucial piece of Dragon Ball mythology, connecting the Saiyans’ ancient past with the divine transformations that define Goku’s modern battles.
